PROJECT TITLE: STRENGTHENING PHCS THROUGH CAPACITY BUILDING OF HEALTHCARE WORKERS TO RESPOND TO GENDER BASED VIOLENCE (GBV) SURVIVORS’
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The aim od the project was to strengthen the capacity of health care workers to identify and respond appropriately to those exposed to gender based violence using the “LIVES” (Listen, Inquire, Validate, Enhance safety, and Support) approach – clustered training as per the given guidelines to provide First Line support for GBV survivors in line with the national GBV curriculum, accurately filling out intake and other required forms, document services in the HMIS register, and submit GBV data in line with the National Clinical Handbook for those exposed to GBV.
Participants skills were also built to make warm referrals and facilitating linkages to other services required by the GBV survivors using the referral pathway for GBV specific to each state. it also aimed to strengthen GBV documentation and reporting for all services including referrals in health facilities by strengthening the capacity of HCWs on service delivery data documentation and recordkeeping using the GBV documentation protocols ad Provide on-site post-training supportive supervision and mentoring to reinforce knowledge and skills.
SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITY
In project states, activities started with kick off meetings between the CCPRH team and the USAID IHP team, the aim of this meeting was to fine tune project implementation strategies and set clear expectations between both parties, this was followed by a mapping of stakeholders as well as advocacy meeting in each state to assign roles and responsibilities and set the agenda for the project
Once the planning was completed, there was a training of trainers at the state level and subsequent training of PHC workers at the cluster/LGA level, trainings were conducted in batches across the states, also, each training was followed by a mentoring activity to ensure health workers internalise learnings from the training. Advocacy was also done to LGA health work force team and traditional rulers in the selected LGAs to inform them about the availability of services
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS/RESULTS FROM THE ACTIVITY
One hundred and Nineteen (119) health workers from the states were trained as trainers from the three states. 1301 health workers were trained in Bauchi and Sokoto while 640 are expected to be trained in the FCT. Over 2000 cases of GBV cases were reported
